Is Chainmail Clothing The Biggest Trend for Summer?
Chainmail and metal clothing is popping up everywhere. I don’t think this trend will translate into the tweenager apparel scene, but we definitely see a version of this in sequins. For the women’s market, however, you better get ready to boogie.
From Kendall Jenner to Bella Hadid, and even Michelle Obama, the chainmail trend is kinda starting to be a big deal for spring and summer 2017. It isn’t a new thing, per se, as fashion always repeats itself. Back in the disco era, a metal halter top was as common as roller skates.
And then Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss brought metal back in the 1990s
Now, in 2017, we are spotting metals in full force, from metallic finishes on our jeans to shoes and now full on metal for our clothing. Runways from designers such as Balmain, Mary Katrantzou, Paco Rabanne and Versus Versace are showcasing this trend.
And celebrities and high profile ladies such as, well, the First Lady dropped jaws in her stunning rose gold metal dress that she wore to her last State Dinner. When I saw this I was speechless.
It’s a trend that I totally get, but is it practical? According to celeb stylist Elizabeth Sulcer, many of the chainmail “fabrics” are lightweight, comfortable and Luxe.
Even fast fashion brands like Forever21 are taking cues quickly and adding styles such as this twofer chainmail dress ($68, Forever21):
