What: Fjallraven backpacks. Originally designed for Swedish school children in 1978, the Fjallraven Kånken has since become one of the most well-loved and iconic backpacks for school, girls and adults around the world.
Who: In the 1950’s, 14 year-old Åke Nordin, an avid outdoor -loving kid from Örnsköldsvik in Northern Sweden decided the backpacks available to him were unsatisfactory. So like any enterprising kid, he took matters into his own hands. Åke built his first framed backpack in his basement with his mother’s sewing machine. Using strong cotton fabric for the pack, he attached the wooden frame using leather straps and used calfskin for the support straps. This frame evenly distributed weight across his back so the pack did not end up uneven, pear-shaped and uncomfortable. It also meant he could carry more weight with ease. Åke’s innovation quickly caught on and in 1960 Fjällräven became the first to commercially make and distribute framed backpacks.
Cool design, but even better for your back: Straight backs are happy backs. 🙂 Kånken was launched in 1978 to spare the backs of school children. Back problems had begun to appear in increasingly younger age groups and shoulder bags were popular then. Wearing a backpack to school that is comfortable and well-balanced means less strain on the back. Because of it’s comfy design and functionality, the backpack has become our most prized possession for school and for travel.
The Brand’s Name: Fjällräven means Arctic Fox in Swedish, honoring the small and highly adaptable animal that lives in the Swedish mountains.
