3-Year-Old Suri Cruise Wears Lipstick, Moms Ticked Off

Suri Cruise was spotted in NYC wearing bright red lipstick after a lunch date with Mom, Katie Holmes. It’s amazing how one little thing like this could spark such a buzz! Apparently, moms everywhere are outraged, just as they were when little Suri was photographed wearing “heels”.

Personally, I know that all girls play dress-up, get into mom’s make-up, shoes, perfume, etc. Why wouldn’t a little girl want to emulate her role model? What is so wrong with a little girl having a sense of style and personality at a young age? I think it’s cute and just plain girlie. Even going out of the house one time wearing it (in my opinion) is not an issue for me.  Alas, I have much bigger fish to fry, bake, saute, etc.
Being the health conscious person that I am, I guess my biggest concern with anyone (little ones especially) is the potential threat of excessive lead content in red lipstick. According to The Daily Green, red lipsticks by certain cosmetic companies contained well over the FDA limit for lead. These were the brands that tested with the most lead content. (PPM means parts per million and is a measure of the concentration of a substance. The FDA limit for lead in candy is 0.1 ppm).

• Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor “Maximum Red” – 0.56 ppm
• Dior Addict “Positive Red” – 0.21 ppm
Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems such as lowered IQ, reduced school performance and increased aggression. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. Lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain where it can interfere with normal development.

Now, having a closer look at the photo, it appears that the “lipstick” Suri is wearing is probably nothing more than a tinted lipgloss.
So, while everyone tattle-tales on Katie and natters over the emotional damage of a little girl playing dress up or even becoming a little lady long before they ‘think’ she should, I think the bigger issue to focus in on is health safety, not a little lipgloss and (very cute, I might add) heels.
