I’ve always loved school uniforms
. Maybe it’s because I never HAD to wear one, but I’ve always loved the classic style of it. I like the tailored looks, the tartan plaids, the pleats, the cardigans, the knee socks, the jackets with crests. And what I find even more fun is layering accessories with it to create a unique look with something that starts off as a blank canvas.
Did you know that some Japanese students wear uniforms, even when they are not required to wear them? They are called “just for fun” nanchatte outfits, or jiyu seifuku, meaning “free uniform”.
But the big questions remains, ‘How to wear a school uniform and still stand out as an individual? What can you do to make it all your own and have fun with it?
IN A RECENT EMAIL FROM A READER: “I AM EDGY, TOMBOY STYLED BUT LOVE BRIGHT CLOTHES. I LOVE ACCESSORIES AND JEWELRY. I NEED IDEAS 4 SCHOOL (IT’S PRIVATE AND UNIFORM)..”
