9 Tips for a Safe Backyard Fourth of July Party

Warm weather, fireworks, and barbecue are always the best parts of any fourth of July party. It’s one of the most beloved outdoor parties of the year. If you are planning to host the party in your backyard this year, you should keep it safe for your guests and family.

Be careful around the grill and fireworks. Make sure children are supervised when going to the pool or playing on any equipment. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen and bug spray when you go outside. Here are some essential tips to ensure that you have an amazing fourth of July party.

1. Always Be Cautious When Using The Grill

Don’t leave the grill unattended or use it too close to your home. Don’t add lighter fluid to an open fire. Make sure the flame doesn’t get out of control. Keep children and pets away from the hot grills.

Make sure your hands are protected when using the grill and avoid using the grill inside your garage or home because it could lead to a gas build-up. Soak coals in cold water then place them in a non-combustible metal before throwing them away.

2. Be Careful When Using Fireworks

Fireworks are always the best part of any 4th of July party but they are very dangerous. Make sure the fireworks are stored away from the house, pets, people and flammables such as shrubs or trees. Don’t throw fireworks at people or your pets.

Light one firework at a time and have some water ready. Don’t try to relight duds. Any children handling fireworks should have adult supervision. Also, you should be cautious when choosing the types of fireworks for children to use. However, once you do this, they are great for the celebratory mood. To add to the atmosphere buy patriotic light ups for your firework show!

3. Be Safe Near or In The Pool

Children near or inside the pool should be supervised at all times. Don’t be distracted by the party and forget to check the children. Always have an idea where the children are if there is a pool in your backyard. Have a rule that no one should swim alone so that both children and adults have supervision when going into the pool.

Don’t rely on float toys to keep your kids safe. Children can drown even with a lot of people nearby. Don’t assume that someone else is watching them. Warn adults who have been drinking to stay away from the pool to avoid drowning.

4. Take Precautions For Pets

Most pets, especially dogs, are easily frightened by fireworks. They panic and tear up beds, toys, and anything they can sink their teeth into. Some dogs might run away because of the fright. Make sure your pets are properly taken care of before you light the fireworks.

Keep your pets indoors and put them in a quiet room if possible. You can use a compression vest to prevent anxiety. If you are having your party at home, you should check in on them and reassure them it’s alright.

5. Supervise Any Outdoor Play

Keep checking on the children playing outdoors. If they are on the trampoline make sure only one jumps at a time. Make sure the playsets are secured and check the temperature of the play equipment. Before the party, you should replace and repair any worn out or damaged playsets.

6. Practice Food And Beverage Safety

Make sure that all food at your party is properly covered to prevent bugs and food poisoning. If you are eating outdoors, don’t leave the food out for too long because it might get too hot thus making people sick. Note that, on a 90-degree day, it’s easy for potato salad to become unsafe in an hour.

7. Be Responsible When Drinking Alcohol

Adults should take proper precautions when drinking alcohol. Keep it away from children and pets. Check on your guests to make sure they don’t get out of control. Give everyone a safe ride home or give them a place to sleep if they are too inebriated to get home.

8. Wear Sunscreen And Bug Spray

If you will be out in the sun, you should have your sunscreen and bug spray ready. Also, you should apply bug spray to keep the insects away. Make sure your guests apply too.

9. Proper Hydration

To avoid overheating and dehydration, drink a lot of water and other clear liquids. Adults of drinking age should alternate water and alcohol for proper hydration throughout the party. Kids should drink plenty of water to stay properly hydrated. If possible, have electrolyte water such as Pedialyte available.
